Fixing Windows 10 Update Failures

Beginning with Windows 10 build 1607 in early 2017, occurrences of update issues increased when performing a major upgrade (build 1709 and above). The computer would download the intended update, then attempt installation in the process of a restart or shutdown - only to fail during the actually installation process. After failing, the computer would reboot normally back into Windows, only to repeat the process again and again.

The failure of Windows 10 Updates is usually caused by a permission issue - not allowing the process to complete. Permissions can be altered by viral infections and system protection tools (like antivirus software).

We recommend the following steps:

  1. Scan the system files, to be sure they are not corrupted. Use sfc /scannow in the command line.
  2. Remove antivirus and any anti-malware protections from the computer. This includes Malwarebytes, if installed.
  3. Reboot the computer (Important not to skip this step).
  4. Upgrade the computer using the latest Windows 10 Installation, created on to a USB key.
